Hoshiarpur - Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Its symptoms are often overlooked or misdiagnosed with aging and many elderly patients go untreated. Common symptoms of Parkinson's disease include slowness in daily activities, body stiffness, tremors or tremors of the arms, legs, and jaw, difficulty walking, or loss of balance when walking.
Recently, a Parkinson's disease patient underwent AI-based Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for the first time at IVY Hospital. A 65-year-old man suffering from tremors (uncontrollable tremors of body parts) for the past 10 years underwent successful DBS, said Dr Jasalveen Kaur Sidhu, a Parkinson's disease specialist trained in DBS programs in London and Singapore and consultant neurologist at IVY. . Dr Jaslavleen said the surgery was a success and after two sessions of programming her tremors reduced by 90%. He said, with this, IVY Hospital has become the first hospital in Punjab to perform AI-based DBS surgery for Parkinson's patients. And so far we have successfully DBSed 5 such cases in last 2 months.
He added, “This AI-based Brain Sense technology can record the brain signals responsible for Parkinson's disease symptoms even when the patient is at home or doing their regular activities. It also helps the treating physician provide personalized, data-driven treatment tailored to the patient's needs. Dr Jaspreet Singh Randhawa, consultant neurosurgery at IVY, said, “It is like a pacemaker surgery for the brain that can control symptoms by changing the electrical signals from the electrodes placed in the brain.
Patients who require DBS surgery They should be examined by a neurologist specializing in Parkinson's and undergo the UPDRS test before being declared fit for surgery. “Patients need a detailed assessment of all such symptoms and treatment is planned according to their age, symptoms and tolerance,” said Dr Jaslavleen.
Since Parkinson's disease is a progressive disease, drugs do not give good results in the long run and brain surgery needs to be planned in such cases.
