Elderly man commits suicide after being harassed by former Bathinda Jail Superintendent
Bathinda, August 19, 2026: A case has come to light where an elderly man—a former soldier and relative of a former Superintendent of Bathinda Central Jail—committed suicide after being harassed by the official. The deceased has been identified as Balvir Singh (63), son of Kaka Singh, a resident of Rampura Phul. Balvir Singh ended his life this afternoon by jumping into 'Lake No. 2' at the defunct thermal power plant in Bathinda.
Eyewitnesses reported that the elderly man arrived on a scooter, parked it, and immediately jumped into Lake No. 2. Upon being informed by locals, the police and the 'Naujawan Welfare Team' arrived at the scene and, with the assistance of the police and the NDRF, retrieved the body within a short time.
Volunteers from the organization immediately rushed the body to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. According to reports, the elderly man recorded a video before taking his own life, in which he accused his relative—former Jail Superintendent Balwinder Singh—along with Balwinder's wife Sukhwant Kaur Sukhi (alias Payal), sisters Balvir Kaur and Gurdeep Kaur, and nephew Ankit (alias Gurnoor) of driving him to suicide. There is also talk of a suicide note having been written, though the police have not officially confirmed this.
The deceased, Balvir Singh, was an ex-serviceman who worked on a contractual basis at the Gobindpura Central Jail. DSP (City) Arun Mundan stated that the body has been placed in the Civil Hospital for further proceedings and the family has been informed.
He added that appropriate action would be taken against the individuals named by Balvir Singh in the video. It is also worth noting that a woman had leveled several serious allegations against this same former jail official just a few days ago; she had even staged a protest, with the support of a Nihang organization, demanding action.
