Abohar, July 7 – Sanjay Verma, co-owner of ‘New Wear Well’ showroom and prominent businessman, was shot dead in broad daylight in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk in Abohar today. According to police and eyewitnesses, the entire incident took place right outside the showroom owned by Verma.
According to information, three unidentified assailants on a motorcycle fired about 10 bullets at Verma. Four of these bullets hit Verma’s i20 car. Internationally famous wrestler Great Khali had inaugurated the showroom much earlier. Pollywood artists, sportspersons, senior judicial officers and politicians were expected to visit the showroom. Sanjay Verma (58) was the younger brother of fashion designer Jagat Verma, who has received many honors and awards at the global level.
According to information, two to three shooters on bikes were already waiting for Verma at Bhagat Singh Chowk. As soon as Verma got out of his car outside the showroom at around 10:15 pm, these unknown assailants opened fire on Verma. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants had come on motorcycles, which they had parked outside Lala Lajpat Rai Park. Three of them walked to the chowk and one of them waited there. The firing by the assailants triggered a stampede there. Hearing the sound of gunshots, nearby shopkeepers and other passers-by fled from there.
Verma was taken to the civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police team has reached the spot and started investigation and collected some bullet shells from the spot. Meanwhile, SSP Gurmeet Singh also reached Abohar to supervise the investigation. The police have taken possession of an abandoned motorcycle found in the lane connecting the chowk to the Government Girls Senior Secondary Smart School.
The police are scanning CCTV cameras in the area to identify and trace the attackers. Senior police officers reached the spot immediately after the incident. The motive behind the murder is not yet clear, but the authorities are investigating all possible angles including business rivalry and personal enmity. The local community is in shock over the murder of Sanjay Verma.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal has condemned the broad daylight murder of Verma and has slammed the Bhagwant Mann government of Punjab. He said that the law and order situation in Punjab is very bad. He said that there is not law but jungle rule in Punjab.
