Washington, June 22 - The US military targeted three nuclear sites in Iran in the early hours of Sunday. With these attacks, America has directly joined the war launched by Israel against Iran's nuclear program. America used B6 bunker buster bombs and cruise missiles for the attack.
President Donald Trump said in his address to the nation at the White House that Iran's main nuclear sites have been 'totally destroyed'. The US President warned Tehran against retaliation and said that Iran will have to choose between 'peace or tragedy'.
Meanwhile, Iran's nuclear agency has confirmed that the US targeted its three nuclear sites in Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz. Tehran, however, insisted that its work will not stop. Iran said there were “no signs of radiation leaks” after US strikes on Isfahan, Fordow, Natanz and other nuclear sites. Israel has closed its airspace in anticipation of Iranian retaliation following the US attack.
Trump later said in a post on social media, “We have been successful in our attack on three of Iran’s nuclear sites, Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. All US aircraft are now out of Iranian airspace. The full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All aircraft are returning safely to their bases.” The US president said, “This is a historic moment for America, Israel and the world. Iran must now agree to end this war. Thank you!”
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised the US president for his decision to attack Iran. Netanyahu said, “Your bold decision to target Iran’s nuclear facilities will change history.” Netanyahu said the US “has done what no other country on earth could have done.”
Meanwhile, the White House and the Pentagon did not elaborate on the immediate action, but Fox News host Sean Hannity said he had spoken to Trump and that six bunker buster bombs were used to target Fordow (the nuclear facility).
Hannity said 30 Tomahawk missiles fired from US submarines 400 miles away targeted Iran’s Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities. Let us tell you that Trump had claimed to reporters on Friday that he had no interest in sending US troops to Iran. Earlier, the US President had indicated that he would decide on this in the next two weeks.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the US on Wednesday that it would "bear irreparable losses" as a result of attacks targeting the Islamic Republic. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai declared that "any US intervention would be an invitation to a full-scale war in the region."
UN condemns US strikes on Iran
International tensions have risen following US air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern on the issue, calling it a move with "potentially catastrophic consequences."
“There is a grave risk that this conflict could quickly spiral out of control, with devastating consequences for civilians, the region and the world,” Guterres said in an official statement. Guterres urged all parties concerned to exercise restraint and move towards a diplomatic solution. “At this critical time, it is essential that we avoid a spiral of chaos,” he said.
