New York/Washington- The US has said that it advocates direct talks between the two sides amid the conflict between India and Pakistan. The US has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for choosing the path of peace. After four days of drone and missile attacks between India and Pakistan, the two countries had agreed on Saturday to end the military conflict.
According to Indian government sources, after talks between the DGMOs of the two countries, an agreement was reached to stop the military action and there was no third party involved. “We welcome the ceasefire between India and Pakistan and commend Prime Minister Modi and Sharif for choosing the path of peace,” US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Pigott said at a press conference on Tuesday.
When Pigott was asked if Pakistani leaders had made any promises during their talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio that they would destroy the terrorist infrastructure, the spokesperson said that they would not discuss private diplomatic talks.
He said, “I can reiterate what we have been saying for the past few days, that we welcome the ceasefire between India and Pakistan this weekend and commend both prime ministers for choosing the path of peace.” The spokesperson said that President Trump had also shared a post on social media about this, “He (Trump) was very clear on this matter. We want to encourage direct dialogue between the parties. We are very clear on this.”
Meanwhile, when asked whether the US has sent a team to Pakistan after the report of the alleged nuclear radiation leak, he said that he has nothing to say on this matter at this time.
