Baghpat/UP, September 8:- A pickup truck carrying pilgrims overturned after being hit in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Twelve people died in the accident; the deceased include six men, three women and three children. More than 19 pilgrims were injured. There were 32 pilgrims travelling in the vehicle, and they were returning to Badaun from Bagad Dham (Gogamedi) in Rajasthan.
According to eyewitnesses, at around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, a speeding canter truck collided with the pickup.
After the collision, the pickup went out of control, hit the divider and then overturned in the middle of the road after being dragged for some distance. The accident on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway was so horrific that bodies were scattered up to 30 metres away, and the scene was filled with screams and cries for help. Hearing a loud sound resembling an explosion, local residents reached the spot and informed the police.
Passersby moved the injured away from the main vehicle to the roadside, and the police later took everyone to the district hospital. The accident occurred between Basi and Bara villages within the Khekra police station area, about 15 kilometres from the district headquarters.
