Ludhiana:- Amid the growing menace of drugs in Punjab, a tragic incident has come to light from Burj Littan village in Ludhiana district. Harpreet Kaur, a 25-year-old woman who was three months pregnant, died under suspicious circumstances. Her maternal family has accused her husband, Jaspreet Singh (alias Jassa), of beating her to death while under the influence of drugs. The unborn child she was carrying also died in the incident.
Acting on a complaint filed by the deceased's family, the police have taken her husband, Jaspreet Singh, and her grandfather, Joginder Singh, into custody. Sudhar Police Station Station House Officer (SHO) Kulwinder Singh is investigating the case. The body has been sent to Ludhiana Civil Hospital for post-mortem; the exact cause of death will be clear only after the report is received.
According to her family, Harpreet Kaur was distressed by frequent domestic disputes and had earlier gone to her parents' home. On Sunday, Jaspreet persuaded her to return to Burj Littan, allegedly assuring them that he would give up drugs.
It is alleged that on Monday night, Jaspreet returned home under the influence of drugs and brutally attacked Harpreet. Her family alleges that she was subsequently strangled to death. They claim that injury marks were found on her body and allege that Jaspreet tried to portray the incident as a suicide. The family has questioned who brought the body down from the roof if she had actually committed suicide. The police are investigating all these aspects.
The most tragic aspect of the incident is that Harpreet Kaur was three months pregnant; if the family's allegations are proven true, the alleged violence claimed the lives of both the woman and her unborn child. Villagers and family members have accused Jaspreet of drug addiction and wandering around. However, these allegations can be confirmed only after the investigation and the post-mortem report.
At present, the police investigation into Harpreet Kaur's death is underway. The circumstances surrounding her death will become clear only on the basis of the post-mortem report and the investigation. The deceased's family has demanded strict action against the accused.
