New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on a petition filed against the detention of jailed environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk till January 7 next year. A bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and NV Anjaria adjourned the hearing in the matter due to lack of time.
Sonam Wangchuk's wife Geetanjali J Angmo has claimed in the petition that Sonam's detention is illegal and an action has been taken that violates her fundamental rights. The hearing in this regard was held on November 24, at which time Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the Union Territory of Ladakh, sought time to respond to the petition filed by Angmo, after which the top court adjourned the hearing. Earlier, the apex court had sought responses from the Centre and the Ladakh administration on October 29.
It is worth mentioning that Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act on September 26. At that time, there were violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh in which four people were killed and 90 injured. The government had accused Sonam Wangchuk of inciting the violence.
