Karnal, June 15: In accordance with the Election Commission of India's directives, a 'Special Intensive Revision-2026' of electoral rolls is being conducted across the country. The SIR campaign achieved significant success on its first day in the district, with palpable enthusiasm among the public.
The objective of the SIR is to purify the electoral roll, ensuring that no eligible citizen is left out and that no ineligible person or deceased individual remains on the list.
Under this campaign, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door voter verification from June 15 to July 14. During this period, no eligible person's name will be deleted from the electoral roll; only the names of ineligible individuals will be removed following the due process of issuing notices. Additionally, with July 1, 2026, set as the qualifying date, youths turning 18 will be able to register to vote and be included in the electoral roll.
The public has responded positively to the campaign, describing the special intensive revision of electoral rolls as a commendable initiative by the Election Commission. It will ensure an error-free electoral roll and provide new eligible individuals the opportunity to register. Many also noted that the campaign offers a chance for those registered in two places to consolidate their registration to a single location. The vote holds immense importance in a democratic system, as it enables individuals to elect the government of their choice.
**Documents acceptable for electoral roll verification**
As per Election Commission guidelines, identity cards and PPO numbers of Central and State Government/PSU employees and pensioners will be accepted. Other valid documents include birth certificates, passports, educational certificates, permanent residence certificates, caste certificates, family registers, and government-issued land or house allotment certificates. Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Dr. Anand Kumar Sharma appealed to the residents of the district, stating that the objective of this campaign is to purify the electoral roll; the aim is not to delete names but to add the names of eligible individuals. He urged citizens to cooperate with the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in this task.
