Banga, July 29:- On the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day at Sikh National College, Banga, the Department of Botany and Zoology organized a tree planting and environmental awareness program in the college campus. During this, students and staff were made aware about nature conservation and environmental protection.
On this occasion, the Principal of the college, Dr. Indu Ratti, while addressing the students, said that the human body is made up of five elements—earth, fire, water, air and sky—among which the earth holds the most important place. She said that the earth provides us with oxygen, food and shelter and only if the earth remains safe, then the future of humanity will be safe.
Expressing concern over global warming, she said that the temperature of the earth is continuously increasing due to the increasing amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Due to this, glaciers are melting and the incidence of floods, droughts and other natural disasters is increasing. Indiscriminate deforestation and vehicle exhaust are making this problem more serious.
Dr. Ratti motivated the students to plant more and more trees, saying that trees are the lungs of the earth and play an important role in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the environment. He called upon every student to plant at least five saplings a year and take care of them.
He stressed on reducing unnecessary use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides for soil protection and promoting the use of organic farming and compost. Along with this, he appealed to stay away from single-use plastic, use cloth and paper bags and adopt rainwater harvesting in every household to conserve water.
Dr. Ratti said that along with modern technology, it is also very important for the youth to stay connected with nature. He said that the college will also run 'No Vehicle Day' and 'Plastic Free Campus' campaigns every month.
He concluded by saying that if we do not protect the earth and the environment today, the coming generations will have to face serious consequences. Therefore, it is the common duty of all of us to take care of the earth. On this occasion, under the leadership of Principal Dr. Indu Ratti, teachers Dr. Sunidhi Miglani, Dr. Amrit Kaur, Dr. Sona Bansal, Dr. Harjot Singh, Prof. Munish Sandhir, Dr. Kumari Sikha, Prof. Manpreet Kaur and non-teaching staff members Chaman Lal, Ashish and Dinesh planted saplings in the college campus. At the end of the function, all the staff and students took a pledge to keep the environment green and pollution-free.
