On the first day of the Ramlila, the episode of Shravan Kumar was staged. When Shravan dips a pot into the Sarayu River to fetch water to quench their thirst, King Dashrath, who is out hunting, mistakes the sound of the water for that of a wild animal and shoots an arrow guided by sound. After being struck by the arrow, the wounded Shravan identifies himself to Dashrath and requests him to give water to his thirsty parents before breathing his last. When Dashrath, filled with remorse, reaches the parents with water and reveals the truth, Shravan’s parents grieve and, before dying, curse Dashrath that he too will suffer and die in agony due to separation from his son. This scene is deeply moving and emotional, conveying to the audience the message of duty towards parents and the principle that actions have consequences.
