Fatehgarh Sahib:- All the Principals of the colleges affiliated to the Punjabi University, Patiala, which are running under the management of the Directorate of Education, Bahadurgarh, Patiala of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr. Jagdeep Singh regarding the unaccounted increase in fees by the university.
The delegation of Principals informed that through Punjabi University's letter No. 238/Colleges/S-5, dated 29 April 2026 and 1474/Colleges/S-3, dated 21 May 2026, the continuation fee of colleges has been increased from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 60,000 and the endowment fund has been increased from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh/40 lakh. Along with this, 50 percent of the interest received by the university on this above amount has also been asked to be deposited with the university. The return fee to be sent by students to the university has also been increased from Rs. 3570 to about Rs. 5500. On this occasion, Dr., President of the Principals' Association of Aided Colleges of Punjabi University, Patiala, Dharminder Singh Ubha said that the above increases are in violation of the government orders and this will put a huge financial burden on the colleges and students, which will spread unrest among the entire youth of Punjab. Therefore, the university should withdraw the increases in its fees with immediate effect, otherwise a big struggle will be waged in this regard in the future, for which the university will be solely responsible.
On this occasion, Deputy Director Colleges of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Dr. Kashmir Singh said that according to the Dean College Development Council, Punjabi University, Patiala, these increases have been made according to the Consumer Index Factor from 2010 to 2026. According to the rules of the Punjab government, any institution can increase its fees by a maximum of 5 percent, but from this unaccounted increase made by the university, it is felt that the university wants to deprive the students of Malwa region from higher education, which is not appropriate.
On this occasion, General Secretary of the Principal Association of Punjabi University, Patiala Dr. Jasvir Singh said that for the bright future of the students, such student-killing decisions should be withdrawn immediately. Along with this, it is necessary to bring uniformity in the subjects being taught to the students under the new education policy in graduation courses as per other universities so that there is no doubt about education among the students. On this occasion, Dr. Ramanjit Kaur, Dr. Karambir Singh, Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Harmeet Kaur Anand, Prof. Malvinder Singh, Dr. Bikramjit Singh, Dr. Satinder Kaur Mann and Dr. Baljit Singh were present.
