Imphal:- The situation in Manipur's Ukhrul district became extremely tense after miscreants set fire to several houses in Liton and its surrounding villages last night, due to which the administration has imposed curfew in the area. A police officer said that about 25 to 30 houses and several government residences were burnt in the arson incident that took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. To prevent violence, the administration has imposed curfew in the area with immediate effect and deployed a large number of security forces.
The violence started with a minor dispute on Saturday night, after which tension increased between the two communities. Seeing the situation deteriorating, many families moved to safer places with their belongings. A joint control room has been set up at Liton police station to keep the situation under control and senior officers are personally present at the spot.
On the other hand, security forces have recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including 36 hand grenades and several pistols, during search operations in various districts. The police have also arrested three extremists in connection with a bomb blast. The government has appealed to the general public not to believe in rumours or fake videos on social media and to cooperate in maintaining peace.
