Chandigarh/Amritsar, February 7:- Achieving great success in the ongoing campaign to make Punjab a safe state as per the guidelines of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Rural Police has arrested the main accused involved in the Lucky Oberoi murder case after a brief encounter in Khasa area of ??Amritsar and recovered a Beretta .30 bore pistol from his possession. This information was given by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Border Range Sandeep Goyal.
The arrested accused, identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Mithapur, Jalandhar, was riding an Activa scooter at the time of committing the crime. It is to be noted that Shaminder Singh has a past criminal record.
According to information, Satwinderpal Singh alias Lucky Oberoi was shot dead by unidentified assailants riding a white Activa in the parking lot of Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Model Town, Jalandhar on Friday morning when he was returning after offering prayers.
DIG Sandeep Goyal said that efforts were started immediately after the incident to identify the accused involved in the crime and ascertain their whereabouts.
He said that the police came to know from reliable sources that Shaminder Singh had taken refuge in Khasa area of ??Amritsar in an attempt to escape arrest after committing the murder. He said that acting immediately on this information, Amritsar Rural Police set up checkpoints in the adjoining areas and intensified the investigation.
Sharing further details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Suhail Qasim Mir said that during this operation, when the police saw the accused coming on a motorcycle, the police party immediately signaled him to stop, due to which the accused panicked and tried to reverse his motorcycle, during which he lost control and fell down.
He said that after this, in an attempt to escape, the accused opened fire on the police party indiscriminately, due to which the police retaliated in self-defense, during which the accused was injured due to bullet injury, after which he was arrested and sent to the hospital for treatment.
The SSP said that during the preliminary interrogation, the accused has also made important revelations about the involvement of another person in the Lucky Oberoi murder case. Based on these revelations, more raids and further action are being taken to arrest the remaining accused.
In this regard, FIR No. 25 dated 6/2/2026 has already been registered at Jalandhar Commissionerate Police Station, Division 6, under Sections 103(1), 3(5) and 61(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
