Chandigarh:- Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjit President and former Akal Takht Executive Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has offered to resign in the interest of Punjab and the Panth.
Sources said that Giani Harpreet had offered to voluntarily leave his post in the party meeting held in Chandigarh recently. There were differences between some leaders of this party during the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections because the party had supported some independent candidates. Many leaders were angry with this.
Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali had sparked a debate two days ago by saying that he was never affiliated with any particular faction. He had said that he (Ayali) was assigned duties by Akal Takht Sahib and he had worked honestly to restore the Akali Dal but he was never affiliated with any political faction. When the matter was raised in the meeting held yesterday, Giani Harpreet Singh allegedly reiterated that he had come in the interest of Punjab and the Sikh Panth.
Shiromani Akali Dal (Resurrection) Secretary General Gurpartap Singh Wadala, who attended the meeting, said that Giani Harpreet Singh did not directly mention resignation but did say that he was ready to sacrifice anything for the Panth. The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere. Everyone in the meeting talked to clear their doubts.
He said that Giani Harpreet said that he originally had a religious field and he came into the political field only when some people challenged the dignity of the Akal Takht (referring to the Badal-led Akali Dal). He said that he took it as a challenge but if there was disagreement on his role, he was ready to make any sacrifice.
Former Akali MP Professor Prem Singh Chandumajra, who is also associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) party, said that everyone spoke their hearts out in the meeting and it was a normal way of talking. The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) group has announced the formation of a new political party in 2025 and is awaiting approval from the Election Commission to recognise its name and symbol as a separate party.
