Chandigarh:- In a significant success in the ongoing efforts to track and bring back criminals hiding abroad to escape justice during the 'War on Gangsters' campaign launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the most wanted gangster Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam has been detained from the Moldova border. This information was given here today by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav.
It is worth mentioning that the fugitive Amritpal Dalam has been detained on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice (Red Corner Notice) issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol and other central agencies at the request of Punjab Police. It is noteworthy that on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab Police has recently constituted Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Counter Intelligence Ashish Chaudhary to expedite the extradition process to reach out to criminals sitting abroad and bring them back to Punjab to face legal action.
According to information, Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam, a resident of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, is closely associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, who had fled abroad with the help of a fake passport. The said accused has been actively involved in extortion operations, targeting big personalities and businessmen, especially in the Amritsar region.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that Amritpal Singh is wanted in several serious criminal cases in Punjab including drug trafficking, murder, attempt to murder etc. and he was on the run for a long time.
He said that due to continuous international coordination and constant follow-up by Punjab Police agencies, Amrit Dalam’s custody has been successful. He also said that legal and diplomatic processes are underway to obtain his extradition/deportation so that he can be brought to justice at the earliest.
The DGP said that the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) of Punjab Police is currently tracking various criminals hiding abroad.
