Hansi:- Superintendent of Police Hansi Vinod Kumar has advised the general public to remain vigilant against cyber fraud happening in the name of electricity bills. He said that cyber criminals send fake messages to people claiming that their electricity bill is overdue and if payment is not made immediately, the electricity connection will be disconnected. A link is also sent along with such messages, on which they are asked to click and make the payment.
The Superintendent of Police said that trusting such messages without investigation can cause heavy loss. Many times, as soon as they click on the link, cyber criminals obtain people's banking information and withdraw money from their accounts. Therefore, before clicking on any unknown link or contacting the number sent on mobile, definitely confirm with the concerned electricity department.
He said that if any information related to the electricity bill is received, then get the bill information and make payment only through the official website, mobile app or authorized office of the electricity department. Do not share your OTP, UPI PIN, bank account, ATM or card related information with anyone.
Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar appealed to the citizens that if they become victims of any cyber fraud, then without wasting time, immediately call the National Cyber Helpline 1930 or lodge a complaint on www.cybercrime.gov.in. By complaining in time, there is a higher chance of saving or getting back the defrauded amount.
He said that the most effective way to protect against cyber criminals is awareness and vigilance. Do not fall prey to any suspicious message, link or call. A little caution can save you from financial loss.
