Sangrur, September 10:- With the objective of encouraging women to participate in sports, particularly cycling, and providing talented women cyclists of the state with a high-level competitive platform to showcase their talent, the Cycling Association of Punjab (CAP) is organizing the ‘Asmita Khelo India Women’s State League (Road)-2026’ in District Sangrur on September 12 and 13, 2026.
Giving information in this regard, President of the Cycling Association of Punjab S. Charanjit Singh Dhaliwal and General Secretary S. Jagdeep Singh Kahlon said that the league competitions will be held on the route from village Gaggarpur to Gharachon in District Sangrur. On both days, the reporting time for the players will be 5:30 a.m., while the competitions will begin at 6:00 a.m.
They said that Cycling Federation of India Chairman S. Onkar Singh and Secretary General S. Maninderpal Singh are paying special attention to promoting cycling in Punjab, for which the Cycling Association of Punjab is grateful to them.
S. Charanjit Singh Dhaliwal said that initiatives like Khelo India have strengthened the sports culture in the country while also creating new opportunities for young athletes, especially girls and women. He said that the daughters of Punjab have proved their mettle at the national and international levels in cycling as well as various other sports, and such competitions are an important platform for emerging players to prove their capabilities.
He said that the objective of the Cycling Association of Punjab is not only to organize competitions but also to identify talented cyclists from the villages and cities of Punjab and provide them with a suitable competitive environment to progress. He said that the increasing participation of women athletes in sports is a very encouraging sign for the sporting future of Punjab.
On this occasion, General Secretary S. Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, while giving information about the technical programme of the league, said that Individual Time Trial (ITT) competitions will be held on September 12. In this, a distance of 10 kilometres has been fixed for the Junior Girls category and 20 kilometres for the Women Elite category.
He said that a Road Race (Mass Start) will be held on September 13, in which players in the Junior Girls category will compete over 20 kilometres, while players in the Women Elite category will showcase their sporting talent over a distance of 30 kilometres.
S. Kahlon said that cycling is a sport in which, along with physical ability, discipline, endurance, technical proficiency, mental strength and continuous practice are of great importance. The association is making efforts to provide maximum competitive opportunities to talented girls of Punjab so that they can bring laurels to the state and the country at the national and international levels in the future.
He further said that cash prizes have also been kept for the winners who perform excellently in the competitions to encourage the players. The player securing first place will be given a prize of Rs. 5,000, the second-place winner Rs. 3,000 and the third-place winner Rs. 2,000.
S. Dhaliwal and S. Kahlon said that the Cycling Association of Punjab is committed to developing women’s cycling in the state as a strong sporting movement. They said that sports not only make women physically fit but also develop self-confidence, discipline, decision-making ability and leadership qualities in them. Therefore, families and sports organizations should further encourage girls to progress in sports.
They invited eligible women cyclists from across Punjab to participate in the league enthusiastically and said that the ‘Asmita Khelo India Women’s State League’ is not merely a competition to win medals or prizes, but an important platform to help women athletes hone their talent, gain competitive experience and set higher goals in sports.
