New Delhi: A woman was killed by her partner or family member every 10 minutes in 2024, according to new data released by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and UN Women on Tuesday. The report said that 137 women and girls were killed by partners or family members every day in 2024. This trend has been going on for the past several years.
According to this 2025 Femicide Brief report, 83,000 women and girls were intentionally killed last year. Of these, 50,000 (or 60 percent), were killed by a partner or family member.
According to UN estimates, this means that almost every 10 minutes a woman or girl lost her life due to violence within the home. In comparison, only 11 percent of male homicide victims during the same period were killed by intimate partners or family members.
“The home remains a dangerous and deadly place for too many women and girls around the world,” said John Brandolino, acting executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. UN Women said femicide is often the result of patterns of violence that begin long before the murder, such as threats, harassment and online bullying.
The report said women and girls are killed in gender-based attacks in every region. The highest rate of femicide by partners or family members in 2024 was recorded in Africa, at three per 100,000 female population.
