In his address on this occasion, Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Tarunpreet Singh Saund said that the time has come to take strict steps to save the youth of Punjab from the evil of drug addiction. He warned the drug smugglers that either they should leave this work or leave the land of Punjab. He said that the youth of Punjab will be freed from this crisis and brought into the mainstream of society by treating and rehabilitating them. He said that to bring the black deeds of drug smugglers in front of the people in an exemplary form and the properties built by drug smugglers by illegal occupation are being demolished by taking full legal action so that a strong message can be given to such anti-social elements. He said that unemployment will be removed by promoting industry in Punjab so that the youth do not even think about drugs after getting employment.
He said that the government will complete the work of cleaning the ponds in 12336 villages of the state in the next financial year, after getting the water sample tested, the water will be used for irrigation. The ponds whose water report is not good will be brought under the Sehewal and Thapar model and treatment plants will be installed. The Rural Development and Panchayat Minister said that the government will build new roads in the villages falling within the radius of 5 km and will get the access roads repaired. Apart from this, a playground will be built in every village to connect the youth with sports.
He appealed to the Sarpanchs to take initiative at their level to raise financial resources for the development of villages, which can also be done with the help of NRI Punjabis or industrialists.
Punjab Mandi Board Chairman Harchand Singh Burst praised today's initiative and said that everyone's cooperation is necessary in a large-scale action against drug addiction. He said that Punjab Mandi Board is taking a loan of Rs 1800 crore from NABARD as an alternative to the Rs 7500 crore rural development fund stopped by the Central Government, in which Rs 200 crore will be contributed by the state government and Rs 492 crore by market committees. With this fund, renovation and repair work of rural roads in the state will be done on war footing.
MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa said that today when the 'War against Drugs' campaign is going on in full swing in the whole of Punjab, it is a good sign that the initiative to connect panchayats with this campaign has come from Derabassi constituency. He said that about 92 panchayats of his assembly constituency have been given grants of more than Rs 9.10 crore by the government. He told Minister Saund that the campaign against drugs is getting full and successful response in Derabassi constituency.
DSP Jaswinder Singh said that during continuous raids on drug hot spots located in Trivedi Camp, Derabassi and Dayalpura of Derabassi and Zirakpur, 52 drug smugglers have been arrested in 21 cases. 15 kg opium, 1 kg 290 grams cocaine, 3 kg ganja, 2 kg 700 grams hashish, 118 grams heroin, 684 intoxicant pills, 13.5 liters of alcohol, 700 grams poppy and drug money worth Rs 3.31 lakh have been recovered from them. Apart from this, household items made from the money earned from drugs have also been seized under section 27 (A) of NDPS.
