Chandigarh: Nearly 50 bariatric surgery patients participated in the Weight Loss Champions Meet organized by Max Hospital, Mohali at a hotel in Chandigarh today. On this occasion, the patients shared their inspiring and transformative journeys from obesity to health after undergoing successful bariatric surgeries at Max Hospital.
One of the patients, Mohar Singh, had been facing serious health issues including breathing problems, fatty liver, and limited mobility due to excessive weight gain. His self-esteem had plummeted. He feared social situations and constantly felt embarrassed and unworthy. Eventually, he decided to undergo weight-loss surgery to reclaim and improve his life.
Another patient, Jagdeep Kaur, said,
"If you had seen me two years ago, I was not the woman standing in front of you today – that person looked about 30 years older than me."
She added, “That’s when I realized I needed to take control of my weight and health. It wasn't just about arthritis or inflammation, it was something more serious. That moment was my turning point. I knew I had to act, because this was about my health.”
Aisiri Debbarma, another bariatric surgery patient, shared,
"I had been struggling with my weight for years – almost half my life. I didn’t understand what was wrong. Yes, I was overweight, but I never let it dominate me. I was always social and outgoing. Then suddenly, I felt lonely and restless. A thought kept haunting me: I needed to become myself again. But it felt impossible. Honestly, bariatric surgery at Max Hospital made it so easy that now I live my normal life with joy and pride."
Dr. Anupam Goyal, Senior Consultant in General, Gastrointestinal and Robotic Surgery at Max Hospital, said,
"We understand obesity better now – it’s not just about self-control. Many people suffering from excess weight or obesity spend years trying to reduce weight through diet and exercise, but often with little success. In such cases, weight-loss surgery can be life-changing."
The event also featured fun games and activities, a healthy recipe workshop, and an interactive session with a professional chef that included live goodie bags and surprise giveaways.
