World Suicide Prevention Day Observed at Drug Deaddiction Centre Bathinda

Bathinda, September 10, 2026:- As per the directions of Civil Surgeon Bathinda Dr. Tapinderjot, World Suicide Prevention Day was observed at the Drug De-addiction Centre Bathinda under the leadership of Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital Bathinda, Dr. Arun Bansal. On this occasion, officers and staff of the Health Department and patients undergoing treatment were sensitized about suicide prevention. In this regard, Civil Surgeon Dr. Tapinderjot said that suicides are occurring in our society due to the continuous increase in mental illnesses. In view of this, the state government has started the Tele-MANAS Punjab programme under the Mental Health Programme. Under this programme, free information regarding mental illnesses and their treatment can be obtained by calling the toll-free number 14416.
Dr. Arun Bansal said that suicide is not a solution to any problem. Mental stress, depression, loneliness, addiction or difficult situations arising in life can sometimes cause a person to experience extreme stress. At such a time, instead of leaving the person alone, it is very important to listen to them carefully and provide emotional support. He said that if a person shows persistent sadness, hopelessness, a desire to remain alone, restlessness, major changes in sleep or eating habits, or distressing thoughts about life, these signs should be taken seriously and help should be sought from family members and health professionals. Timely counselling and treatment can help a person come out of a crisis.
Deputy Mass Media Officer Rohit Jindal appealed to persons undergoing treatment to pay special attention to their mental health along with quitting drugs. He said that difficulties arising during the process of quitting drugs can be addressed through treatment and counselling, and in case of any kind of problem, they should speak openly with health workers.
On this occasion, Deputy Mass Media Officer Lakhwinder Singh Kaith and Gagandeep Singh Bhullar sensitized those present about suicide prevention, mental health care and de-addiction, and encouraged needy persons to seek expert assistance in time.
