Successful treatment of tracheal stenosis without open surgery at Livasa Hospital Amritsar

Amritsar: Livasa Hospital, Amritsar, successfully treated the first case in Punjab of subglottic tracheal stenosis using a silicone tracheal stent via advanced bronchoscopy techniques, without high-risk open surgery. Subglottic tracheal stenosis is a condition in which the upper part of the trachea, just below the voice box (larynx), becomes narrowed.
The Livasa pulmonology team, led by Dr. Baljot Singh, Consultant in Interventional Pulmonology, successfully treated the patient using advanced interventional pulmonology techniques, including balloon bronchoplasty followed by the placement of a silicone tracheal stent, restoring airway patency and ensuring long-term airway stability. Dr. Baljot Singh said during a press conference here today, "Previously, patients with such complex airway constrictions had very limited options and often required major, high-risk surgery. With advancements in bronchoscopy techniques, many complex airway disorders can now be managed safely, minimally invasively, and without open surgery.
The patient, suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), had a complex airway medical history. A year ago, the patient underwent prolonged intubation followed by a tracheostomy, which was subsequently successfully decannulated. During a later illness, the patient again required intubation and tracheostomy.
This time, however, the tracheostomy tube could not be removed due to severe subglottic tracheal stenosis. A detailed evaluation confirmed subglottic tracheal stenosis, a challenging condition traditionally managed through complex surgical procedures.
CEO of Livasa Hospitals, Anurag Yadav, said, "This case exemplifies our commitment to bringing advanced, world-class healthcare to patients in North India. This case marks a significant advancement in airway management in Punjab and highlights the increasing role of advanced bronchoscopy in treating complex airway diseases.
We are striving to ensure that patients in the region have access to safe, advanced, and evidence-based healthcare of the highest standards without the need to travel far from home," said Medical Superintendent Dr. Yogendra Tomar.
