Kidney Donors Honored on the Occasion of Raksha Bandhan

Mohali:- On the eve of Raksha Bandhan, around a dozen siblings were honored at Edison Hospital, Mohali on Wednesday, who gave new life to others by donating their kidneys. The event, titled “Bonds of Life”, appreciated the immense courage and selfless spirit of the organ donors. It was also highlighted how living organ donation changes lives and provides a new chance for health.
On this occasion, Chief Renal Transplant Surgeon Dr. Arjinder Singh Bains, Nephrologist and Transplant Physician Dr. Taruna, Urologist Dr. Nipun Gupta and Edison Facility Director Rupinder Kaur honored 6 donor-recipient sibling pairs.
The event also provided a platform for donor-recipient siblings to share their emotional journey—from the onset of chronic kidney disease and grueling dialysis treatment to successful transplant surgery and full recovery.
Dr. Arjinder Singh Bains said, “A kidney transplant is not just a surgical procedure; it is a second chance at life. When a brother or sister comes forward for organ donation, it is the holiest form of Raksha Bandhan – protecting the life of the sibling. With modern technologies and advancements, living kidney donation is completely safe and it gives the recipient a chance to live a normal, healthy life.”
Kulwinder Kaur (38) from Barnala, who donated her kidney to her brother, said: “When I came to know about my brother’s kidney failure, donating a part of my body to save his life was the most heartwarming thing I have ever done. Today, we are both healthy, active and living a completely normal life.”
Recalling the moment she donated her kidney to her brother, Kuldeep Kaur said, “I did not see my brother gradually weakening on dialysis.”
She said, “It was heartbreaking to see my energetic brother hooked up to a dialysis machine three times a week. He was losing hope day by day. The moment the doctor said I was a matching donor, I did not think twice. Donating one of my kidneys to my brother was not a favor—it was my duty as a sister. Seeing him smiling, working and living a full life again is the biggest blessing of my life.”
Nachhattar Singh (49) from Patiala, who received a kidney from his sister, expressed his gratitude with emotion, "When my kidneys failed, my life came to a standstill. I felt like I had become a burden on my family. Without a moment's hesitation, my sister came forward and told me, 'We have come into this world together, and we will fight this disease together.' She has given me a second life, and every breath I am taking today is a gift from her."
