Health Department Issues Advisory on Snakebite Prevention
Una, September 1: In view of the potential risk of snakebite incidents in the district, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Una, has appealed to the public to exercise special caution. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Una, Dr. Sanjeev Verma, stated that the likelihood of venomous snakes emerging increases during the rainy season. Therefore, it is essential to remain vigilant when stepping out of the house or working near fields, bushes, woodpiles, or tall grass.
The CMO explained that a snakebite can manifest symptoms such as a wound, intense burning sensation, vomiting, nausea, sweating, dizziness, breathing difficulties, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, and pain or swelling at the bite site. In some cases, a snakebite can become severe; hence, timely treatment is crucial.
*Precautions to Prevent Snakebites*
Dr. Sanjeev Verma urged people not to reach into tall grass, bushes, woodpiles, or crevices between stones where snakes might be hiding. When working in fields or other areas, one should wear long, sturdy boots and keep arms and legs covered. Avoid going out unnecessarily at night. Do not walk barefoot in the dark during the rainy season, and thoroughly check your shoes before putting them on.
He advised keeping homes and surrounding areas clean and clearing away bushes and unnecessary debris to minimize the chances of snakes finding hiding spots.
*Seek Immediate Hospital Care in Case of Snakebite*
The CMO emphasized that if a person is bitten by a snake, one should not panic or waste time. Keep the victim calm and immobilize the affected limb as much as possible. Immediately call the 108 ambulance service or transport the victim to the nearest health facility. He urged people not to waste time on rituals, home remedies, or procedures like cutting the wound in the event of a snakebite. Timely medical treatment plays the most crucial role in saving the victim's life.
*Anti-snake venom available at health facilities*
Dr. Sanjeev Verma stated that anti-snake venom is available at Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Civil Hospitals, and the Regional Hospital in Una district. This facility is provided at health institutions based on need. He appealed to the public to transport the victim to a government health facility without delay in case of a snakebite, ensuring that necessary medical treatment can be initiated promptly.
He emphasized that vigilance, timely medical assistance, and appropriate treatment play a vital role in preventing severe consequences from snakebites. Citizens should exercise caution during the monsoon season and immediately seek assistance from the Health Department in any snakebite-related emergency.
