Haryana Government Takes Concrete Steps to Improve Air Quality in DelhiNCR

Chandigarh, September 10:- In Haryana, efforts are being accelerated to curb water and air pollution through treatment of sewage and industrial wastewater, wastewater management in villages, biogas, stubble management, vehicular emissions and expansion of green cover.
Chief Secretary Shri Anurag Rastogi today reviewed the action plans related to the Yamuna Action Plan and improvement of air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region here and directed various departments to expedite their assigned works.
During the review of the Yamuna Action Plan, district-wise progress of sewage treatment plants, common effluent treatment plants, village-level wastewater management and biogas projects in the Yamuna basin was reviewed. Divisional Commissioners of Ambala, Faridabad, Rohtak, Gurugram and Karnal presented progress reports of their respective areas.
Member Secretary of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board Shri Yogesh Kumar stated that six STPs with a total capacity of 132 MLD are under construction at Bajghera, Kherwa (Sonipat), Radaur Road (Yamunanagar), Dadlana (Panipat), Badshahpur (Faridabad) and Sodhapur (Panipat). All six projects are targeted for completion by December 2027.
In addition, upgradation work is underway on six STPs with a total capacity of 304 MLD at Gohana, Sunaria (Rohtak), Line Par (Bahadurgarh), Hasanpur (Palwal), Dhanwapur and Baharampur (Gurugram). Several other STP projects are also at various stages of tendering, technical evaluation and implementation.
The proposed CETP projects for treatment of industrial wastewater were also reviewed. Tenders for the proposed 50 MLD CETP at Pratapgarh in Faridabad were invited on August 10, and the last date for submission of bids is September 14. The DPR and estimate of the proposed 25 MLD CETP at Mirzapur are under examination, while an estimate of Rs 200.17 crore has been prepared for the 15 MLD Badshahpur CETP.
Action is also being taken to stop the flow of industrial wastewater into Drain No. 2 in the old industrial area near Saini Colony in Panipat. The regional office of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board inspected 14 units, of which action has been taken against four defaulting units.
Under village-level sewage and wastewater management, five works have been completed so far, while seven works are in progress. Works have been completed in Piyont, Chandauli, Kachhwa, Nigdu and Mandola. Work on the three-pond system at Katwal in Sonipat is underway.
Work is also being carried out on three new or proposed biogas projects in the state with a combined capacity of 650 tonnes per day. A 400 TPD capacity plant is under construction at Rai-Jakhauli in Sonipat, while the estimate for a 100 TPD capacity project at Mohna-Ballabhgarh in Faridabad has been prepared and sent for approval of non-scheduled items.
Reviewing the identified measures to control air pollution in Delhi and NCR, the Chief Secretary reviewed the progress of works related to vehicular emissions, pollution caused by dust and waste, prevention of stubble burning and expansion of green cover.
The Parivartan Yojana portal to provide assistance for replacing old trucks and buses is now operational. The first application under the scheme was received on July 22, 2026. At the meeting, directions were issued to actively encourage eligible truck and bus owners to register and participate in the scheme.
Both ex-situ and in-situ measures are being emphasized for stubble management. In view of the progress made in compressed biogas technology, special attention is being given to promoting small-scale biomass plants. These measures will be implemented by the Agriculture Department and Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency.
The Forest Department was directed to expedite works related to achieving plantation targets, increasing the area under tree cover and promoting the development of small green areas.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment Department Shri Sudhir Rajpal, Additional Chief Secretary of Public Works (Building and Roads) Shri A.K. Singh, Managing Director of Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Shri Vinay Pratap Singh and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
