Farmers Protest Ends in Chandigarh

Mohali, September 8:- Following an agreement reached between the Punjab government and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the farmers’ protest that had been continuing for the past seven days on the Chandigarh border officially ended today. Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian himself reached the protest site, handed over the Punjab government’s approval letter to the farmers’ leaders and announced from the stage that all demands related to the government had been accepted.
On this occasion, the Agriculture Minister made a major announcement, saying that the state government would convene a special session of the Punjab Assembly this month to cancel the state’s water agreements. After the government accepted the demands and the agreement letter was received, all the leaders of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and thousands of farmers participating in the protest heaved a sigh of relief and have now left for their respective homes. Earlier, all the leaders of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha had left for the protest pandal after holding a meeting at a hotel in Phase 11.
Following the Agriculture Minister’s announcement, the farmers’ protest that had been continuing on the outskirts of Chandigarh for the past seven days ended today, and thousands of farmers who had gathered here have left for their respective homes.
It is worth mentioning that at a meeting held on Sunday night at Punjab Bhawan with Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, the Punjab government had accepted the farmers’ organisations’ major demand of cancelling certain clauses of the river water agreements by convening a special session of the Assembly. Along with this, some other demands, including the Electricity Amendment Bill, Seed Bill and a one-time settlement for farmers’ loans, were also accepted. These included the demand for an increase in the price of sugarcane.
