Ban on refuelling old vehicles, 'attack on middle class': Sisodia.

New Delhi, July 3 - AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Thursday termed the recent ban on refuelling of old vehicles in the capital by the BJP-led Delhi government as yet another attack on the middle class. The BJP had, however, termed it a necessary step in its ongoing efforts to control pollution.

Sisodia said at a press conference here, "The BJP government has issued a cruel order to remove 61 lakh vehicles from Delhi's roads. This is not governance; this is 'Phulera ki Panchayat'. Families who have taken good care of their vehicles are now being punished. Even vehicles that have covered less than 10,000 km are being declared unfit.
The orders, which will come into effect from July 1, have banned petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years from refuelling in Delhi. The order is part of a crackdown on end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). Penalties for violating these orders include a fine of Rs 10,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 5,000 for two-wheelers, which may include impoundment and towing costs.
Questioning the motives behind the policy, Sisodia asked, “Who will benefit from this? Vehicle manufacturers, scrap dealers and number plate companies. Is it a coincidence that this order has come just before the permission to increase taxi fares was given?”
He also accused the BJP of hypocrisy, saying, “They overturned the orders of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court with an ordinance overnight. Now they say they cannot help 61 lakh families of Delhi?”
