Chandigarh- The proposal to increase parking fee has been passed only with the consent of the Mayor of Chandigarh and the BJP councillors. When the Mayor got her photo published in the newspapers while giving a memorandum to the Chief Secretary, she said that she has come after giving a memorandum to improve the condition of parking, I had said then itself that this is our Mayor's next step in increasing parking after increasing the property tax.

The child's feet are visible in the cradle itself.
In a city like Chandigarh, which is considered a city of working people, a huge parking fee is already being collected from the public. Any further increase in it means looting the earnings of the public.
It is my humble request to the Municipal Commissioner Sahib to have the parking spaces in all markets managed by the respective Market Welfare Associations, as is being done successfully in Sector 22 and Sector 19. These associations have shown how parking can be managed efficiently without harassment or charging minimal fees, thereby providing a hassle-free experience to shopkeepers and business owners. Free parking or nominally supervised parking increases footfall, which directly benefits local businesses and boosts economic activity in these areas.
The Municipal Corporation has failed to generate any significant revenue from parking in the last decade, and instead, parking management has become synonymous with exploitation and public inconvenience.
The solution lies in decentralizing this service to market committees, which are more accountable, better aware of the ground realities, and directly invested in the well-being of their markets.
Implementing a uniform policy that empowers market welfare associations to manage parking with proper transparency and oversight can restore public trust, improve market access and eliminate unfriendly practices.
