For the past few decades, our smiling Punjab has been facing the tragedy of various new era drugs. Among these are chemical drugs which are eating away at the youth of today. Every day, due to drug overdose, young boys are dying in every village and city. The families left behind are left to spend their lives in the tragedy of debt and ruin. The biggest challenge facing the governments and families of today is to save the youth and children from the scourge of this evil valley.
In today's time, when families are breaking up, every person is self-centered and facing various kinds of problems in the race for money, so sometimes they resort to drugs to get rid of mental stress. There can be many other reasons for this such as peer pressure, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, unemployment or negative thinking about the future etc. Children who see their parents using drugs at home, grow up to be more likely to become addicted to drugs in the later stages of life due to environmental and genetic factors.
A person dependent on drugs can show many symptoms, mainly when health, work or family is being harmed, the person continues to use drugs without caring. Violence is also a common phenomenon of the tendency. Similarly, lack of control over drug abuse, inability to stop or reduce drinking, looking for various excuses to do drugs, neglecting work and neglecting daily food and drink. Indifference about physical care and dressing are common signs.
Although drugs or alcohol are seen as a social evil, its use has been prevalent since the Vedic period. The use of cheap drugs is common among the poor. If we talk about the states of India, Chhattisgarh is one such state where the consumption of alcohol is the highest in the country, even though its average per capita income is lower than many states. Cases of deaths due to alcohol are reported daily. Recently, more than two dozen people died due to consuming poisonous alcohol in Majitha constituency, after which 10 people died due to this in Ludhiana.
Anyway, all types of alcohol, as the warning written on every bottle, are harmful to health. But the most deadly is the illegally produced alcohol, which is commonly called 'raw alcohol'. This alcohol is often prepared and sold secretly in areas where the working class or low-income people live. Because it is cheaper and more easily available than the liquor available from ordinary shops. Poor people consume it and damage their health.
Sometimes it causes blindness or even death. Jaggery, water and urea are usually used to make raw liquor. Many other chemicals are also added to it. Oxytocin is used to decompose jaggery quickly and ammonium chloride is also added to increase the intoxication. In this way, methyl alcohol is formed instead of ethyl alcohol by fermentation, which makes this liquor poisonous.
In our country, many tragedies have occurred in different states in the last few decades due to drinking such poisonous liquor. Surprisingly, such incidents have also taken place in those provinces where the government has implemented complete prohibition of drugs. After the deaths due to poisonous liquor in the Majitha area of Punjab yesterday, the government also took action, a series of raids and arrests took place. Condolences to the bereaved families and statements of political leaders made headlines in the newspapers. Promises of compensation and government jobs were made.
But the biggest thing is that why do governments and the common people not learn lessons from such incidents? Families and children become helpless. The victims of such tragedies are usually the working class. People also raise questions on the compensation given by the governments later, why the tax revenue collected from the common people, which is meant for development works, is distributed in this way. Governments need to make strict laws to prevent such incidents.
