New Delhi:- The country's star female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has got a big legal victory from the Supreme Court. The court has allowed Vinesh to participate in the 2026 Asian Games selection trials. The Supreme Court has upheld the Delhi High Court's decision, which was challenged by the Wrestling Federation of India.
Wrestling Federation's petition dismissed
The Wrestling Federation of India had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court, calling the Delhi High Court order 'illegal'. The federation argued that they were not given a proper opportunity to respond in detail before the verdict was pronounced in Vinesh's favor. However, the court refused to stay the High Court's order and has now fixed the next hearing of the matter for June 1.
Logistics and weight category challenge
The federation had indicated in the court that the list of players has already been sent to Japan, which may cause logistical problems. Apart from this, the federation has clarified that even if Vinesh qualifies through the trials, she will have to compete only in the 50 kg weight category. These selection trials for the Asian Games are to be held in New Delhi on May 30 and 31.
Vinesh's struggling journey
Vinesh Phogat has been in the news for a long time. She actively participated in the protests against the then president of the Wrestling Federation Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023. She was disqualified on the day of the final in the Paris Olympics 2024 due to being 100 grams overweight, after which she announced her retirement from wrestling. Now, with this decision of the Supreme Court, hopes of his return to the playing field have been rekindled.
