Tehran/Washington: US President Donald Trump has made his stance regarding Iran crystal clear. Speaking to Fox News, Trump stated that he is in no rush to reach an agreement with Iran. He claimed that behind-the-scenes talks are underway between officials from both sides. Amidst these discussions, he also issued a direct warning to Oman.
Referring to the current situation in Iran, Trump noted that the country is attempting to project strength publicly. According to him, internal pressure on Iran is mounting. Trump also spoke of the possibility of Tehran waving the white flag—signaling an admission of defeat.
Trump adopted a very stern tone regarding Oman, stating, "If Oman stands in America's way, it will face heavy bombing." This statement comes at a time when Oman and Iran are engaged in discussions concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Oman has previously acted as a mediator between the two nations. Recently, Iran had spoken of moving towards an agreement with Oman regarding the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, regarding Iran's nuclear program, Trump reiterated on Monday that his primary objective is to ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons under any circumstances. He described this as his foremost and enduring goal.
Tensions already exist between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. It is one of the world's most critical maritime routes, through which vast quantities of crude oil and gas are transported. Any disruption to this route could impact global markets. Trump has previously stated that, after defeating Iran, he would consider declaring the Strait of Hormuz US territory. Conversely, Iran remains adamant about maintaining its control over the region. In other words, while there is talk of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the acrimony in public statements persists.
