Amritsar- Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has raised the issue of Sikhs being barred from wearing beards in US Defence Forces with the Union Ministry of External Affairs.
Regarding the statement of the US Defense Secretary barring Sikhs from wearing beards in US Defence Forces, the Shiromani Committee has written a letter to the Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. He has requested to raise this issue with the US government and put a stop to it.
The letter stated that this decision has hurt the religious beliefs of Sikhs, it should be stopped and Sikhs should be allowed to serve in the US Army while following their religion as before.
Shiromani Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that such a statement by an official of the US government is a disregard for the traditions and fundamental rights of Sikhs.
He said that Sikhs have achieved good positions all over the world with their abilities, they have also contributed to the development of America and Sikhs are also doing their duty with full dedication in the US army. In such a situation, the decision to prevent Sikhs from wearing beards during military duty is not logical.
