Chandigarh, September 30:- A rare ‘osteoid osteoma’ was successfully diagnosed and treated in a 31-year-old man at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mohali. Dhruv Seth, a resident of Chandigarh, had been suffering from persistent pain in his right shoulder for the past one year.
For accurate diagnosis and advanced treatment, Dhruv consulted Dr. Harjoban Singh, Principal Consultant, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, at Max Hospital. A review of his previous scans raised suspicion of a rare bone tumour.
A subsequent CT scan confirmed the diagnosis. The tumour was located near the right shoulder blade, an unusual location for an osteoid osteoma.
Following the diagnosis, Dr. Harjoban Singh and his team, in collaboration with the Interventional Radiology team led by Dr. Tegbir Singh Sidhu, Principal Consultant, Interventional Radiology, planned a minimally invasive CT-guided microwave ablation to treat the tumour without open surgery. The procedure was successfully completed, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in stable condition the following day.
Dr. Harjoban said that osteoid osteoma is generally seen more commonly in younger age groups, and its presence near the shoulder blade had further increased the challenge of diagnosis.
