Amritsar (Jagmeet Ghuman):- A 72-year-old woman has been given a new lease of life following complex skull base surgery for a brain tumour at Livasa Hospital, Amritsar. The woman had a massive brain tumour, which was successfully operated on.

The complex neurosurgical procedure was performed with the assistance of a microscope, and a large olfactory groove meningioma measuring more than 6 centimetres was successfully removed.

The patient was admitted to Livasa Hospital with complaints of altered mental status, recurrent seizures, loss of the sense of smell and deteriorating vision. Investigations revealed a large olfactory groove meningioma. This is a type of tumour located at the base of the skull, near the frontal lobe of the brain. It lies close to structures that control the senses of smell and vision.

Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Amanjot Singh Boparai explained that an olfactory groove meningioma originates from the protective covering of the brain and usually develops in the frontal and skull base regions.

He said that, depending on the tumour’s size and location, patients may experience changes in their sense of smell, vision problems, seizures, headaches and altered consciousness. Surgery for a tumour of such a large size is challenging because these tumours are located extremely close to vital nerve structures and blood vessels in the brain.
