Sangrur, November 5:- A demonstration of green ammonia application in wheat crops, covering approximately 300 acres, has been launched through the joint efforts of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI), Zone 1, Ludhiana, and PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur. Under this project, green ammonia had been applied to 94 acres in Sangrur district up to November 4, 2026. The main objective of this initiative is to educate farmers about the balanced and judicious use of nitrogen fertilizers, protect soil health and promote efficient fertilizer management.

Under the project, the application of green ammonia will be scientifically evaluated and demonstrated across approximately 300 acres in Sangrur district. The programme was jointly launched on October 24, 2026, at village Bijalpur by ICAR-ATARI, Zone 1, Ludhiana, and PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur. Under this technology, a specialised machine places green ammonia into the soil at a depth of approximately 15 centimetres below the ground surface to ensure effective utilisation of nitrogen. The usefulness of this technology, its capacity to make nitrogen available, and its impact on crop growth and yield are being scientifically evaluated.

The Director of ICAR-ATARI, Zone 1, Ludhiana, scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, and other officials were present during the demonstration.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Parvinder Sheoran, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone 1, Ludhiana, said that in view of the growing demand for nitrogen in agriculture, developing fertilizer management methods based on alternative and innovative technologies was an important need of the time. He stated that the institute was conducting research and technology demonstrations to explore the possibilities of supplying nitrogen to crops through green ammonia. If scientific trials produce positive results, this technology could help reduce dependence on urea in the future and provide an effective alternative for nitrogen management.

Dr. Mandeep Singh, In-charge of PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, while addressing the farmers, said that sustainable agriculture requires not only an increase in crop production but also the protection of soil health and natural resources. He added that the scientific evaluation of new technologies such as green ammonia was an important step towards providing farmers with new options for nitrogen management in the future.

On this occasion, scientists Dr. Rukinderpreet Singh Dhaliwal, Assistant Professor (Crop Science), and Dr. Sunil Kumar, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), apprised the farmers of the objectives and importance of the 'Khet Bachao Muhim' (Save the Fields Campaign). They particularly emphasised protecting soil health, maintaining soil fertility, and ensuring the balanced and judicious use of fertilizers. They explained that the scientific application of green ammonia could emerge as a potential alternative for nitrogen management and that the effective use of fertilizers could also help achieve the objectives of the 'Khet Bachao Muhim'.

This initiative could prove to be an important step towards using green ammonia as a potential substitute for urea in agriculture, ensuring the judicious use of nitrogen fertilizers and maintaining soil health.
