Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, 10 March: Under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Mrs. Komal Mittal, an important meeting was organized under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Mrs. Sonam Chaudhary to prevent the burning of wheat stubble/residue during the Rabi season 2026-27. Officials of the Agriculture Department, Police Department, Pollution Control Board and Cooperative Department participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and the Central Air Quality Management, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Mrs. Sonam Chaudhary appealed to all farmers that after harvesting the wheat crop and preparing straw, the remaining residue should be ploughed into the fields. She said that this method increases the fertility of the soil and also reduces the unnecessary expenditure on fertilizers for future crops.
She further said that burning wheat stubble increases the temperature in the environment, due to which beneficial insects present in the fields are destroyed. Along with this, due to the dryness of the air, trees and other vegetation are also damaged. She appealed to the farmers not to burn stubble and to contribute towards protecting the environment.
On this occasion, Chief Agriculture Officer Doctor Sukhjinder Singh Bajwa informed that the Agriculture Department is continuously organizing farmer training camps at the village level to create awareness among farmers.
He said that farmers will also be made aware about crop residue management through awareness vans, village council meetings, block-level camps, street plays and distribution of literature. Apart from this, information will also be provided through publicity vans in the district and related literature will be distributed.
The meeting was attended by Doctor Subhkaran Singh, Doctor Raman Karoria (Agriculture Officer), Nodal Officer of the Crop Residue Management Scheme Doctor Gurdial Kumar, Agriculture Development Officer Doctor Jaspreet Singh, Doctor Danis Kumar, Doctor Gurvinder Kaur, Environmental Engineer Mrs. Kavaldeep Kaur and progressive farmers related to machinery.
