Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, 06 November 2025: A special meeting was held today at Kheti Bhawan, S. A. S. Nagar to discuss sugarcane development, payment and other issues. This meeting was chaired by Dr. Amrik Singh, Cane Commissioner Punjab, during the meeting, the activities being done to increase the area under sugarcane crop and per hectare productivity during the autumn season were reviewed. 
On this occasion, Dr. Guljar Singh Sanghera, Director, Regional Research Station, Kapurthala, Dr. Mandhir Singh Project Officer (Sugane) Jalandhar, Assistant Sugarcane Development Officer of Sugarcane Section, Agricultural Development Officer, General Manager of all sugar mills, Chief Sugarcane Development Officers and other representatives participated.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Amrik Singh said that sugarcane is the main crop of Punjab and its per hectare productivity needs to be increased. He said that this time is very important for intercropping in sugarcane crop and at this time there is a need to provide technical information regarding crop maintenance along with intercropping to sugarcane farmers.
He said that by sowing intercropping in the autumn sowing of sugarcane crop, the income of sugarcane farmers can be increased by increasing the sugarcane production per hectare. He instructed the officers of the sugarcane section and all sugar mills that in future, intercropping should be done between sugarcane and sugarcane only as per the recommendations of Punjab Agricultural University. 
He said that the area under sugarcane crop should be increased under 4 feet distance (wide spacing method) under sugarcane so that the yield of sugarcane crop can be increased significantly and keeping in mind the interests of the state, water can be saved. 
He also directed all the officers to organize awareness camps under the Krishi Unnati Yojana to make the sugarcane farmers aware of various latest technologies to increase the production and productivity of sugarcane crop. He said that the set targets should be completed on time.
On this occasion, Dr. Gulzar Singh Sanghera, Director, Regional Research Station, Kapurthala, while sharing important information about sugarcane crop, said that the Assu sugarcane crop is successful only if sowing is done at a distance of four feet wide and as per the recommendations, only those crops are sown as per the recommendations, which are not bigger than the sugarcane crop by February. 
He said that Punjab Agricultural University is working for the mechanization of sugarcane crop so that the shortage of laborers can be overcome.
