Chandigarh, November 3, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chandigarh has termed the decision of the BJP government at the center to dissolve the Senate of Panjab University as a direct attack on both democracy and education. In protest against this dictatorial decision, a candle march was organized outside Neelam Theater, Sector 17 today, in which peaceful protest was registered.
In this candle march, Omkar Singh Aulakh (General Secretary), P.P. Ghai, Councilor Yogesh Dhingra, Suman, Jasbir Singh Laddi, Ramchandra Yadav, Dr. Jagga, Deshraj Sanwar, Shakeel Mohammad, Advocate Khutcha, Vikrant A. Tanwar (State Media Incharge) along with AAP Punjab University student wing leader Lalit Mohan, Rajesh Chaudhary (Pradesh Joint Secretary), Biru, Kuldeep, Bobby Singh, S.P. Yadav, Inderjit Sharma, senior office bearers, activists and a large number of citizens participated.
AAP Chandigarh President Vijaypal Singh said that the BJP government is systematically weakening democratic institutions. Now an attempt is being made to control independent educational institutions like universities. This decision is not only an attack on academic freedom, but will also have a serious impact on the quality of education, research work and transparency of decision-making.
He said, “Senate is the soul of the university where teachers, students and scholars participate. BJP has destroyed the democratic structure by dissolving this senate. Now the government is imposing its arbitrary decisions and bringing education under political control.”
The Aam Aadmi Party says that the Panjab University is the intellectual identity of not only Punjab but the entire country. Any attempt to control it by force is a conspiracy to weaken the education system, which will have a negative impact on both the education and research culture of the coming generations.
Vijaypal Singh said, “The BJP should understand that the university is not an office of any party, it is a temple of knowledge, free thought and democracy. The Aam Aadmi Party will fight this battle from the streets to the Parliament, so that educational institutions can be protected and the foundation of democracy will be strengthened.
