Chandigarh, October 23:- Setting an example of humanitarian service and dedication to society, the family of 90-year-old Harbans Singh honoured his last wish by donating his mortal remains to the Department of Anatomy at PGIMER, Chandigarh, on October 17, 2026, for medical education and research.
Harbans Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur and a retired mathematics lecturer from a government school, had expressed his wish to donate his body through a legal will on September 4, 2015. He believed that even after death, the human body could serve humanity by contributing to medical education, research and the training of future doctors. His three daughters, Yadvinder Kaur, Amandeep Kaur and Dr. Harsimran Kaur, along with other family members, fulfilled his wish.
His daughters said that fulfilling their father’s wish was a matter of pride for them. During this difficult time, they found comfort in knowing that their father’s final contribution would help educate future doctors and advance medical science.
Harbans Singh devoted his life to education, spirituality and social responsibility. He had earned four postgraduate degrees in Mathematics, Political Science, History and Education. He had deep faith in Sikh values and humanitarian service. He regarded the medical profession as a great service to humanity and had a special interest in medical science. He also regularly donated to the Pingalwara institution to help people in need.
During the last 12 years of his life, he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Despite this, his views on body donation continued to inspire his family. He did not believe in taboos and superstitions associated with death and considered body donation a meaningful way of giving back to society.
The Department of Anatomy at PGIMER expressed its gratitude to the family for this contribution. Body donation helps medical students understand the structure of the human body and gain practical knowledge.
