Nawanshahr/Rahon- National Labor Organization (NLO) convener Baldev Bharti said that the continuous rains in Punjab for the last 2 weeks have caused a lot of damage to the poor, rough, mud houses of the landless poor laborers.
Their old, dilapidated, rough houses made of beams and sticks are no longer habitable. The continuous rain has shaken these houses from the roofs to the foundations. Many houses with permanent lanterns have also been flooded in these rains. Their sticks have rotted and mud has come out of the bricks.
The narrow houses with low ceilings without windows and doors of the majority of the poor people were already not suitable for their needs. The poor people are living a very bad life in these houses. Many poor people have cracks in their houses and many houses have collapsed. Many families have not been able to get any benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the past.
Baldev Bharti strongly demanded from the Punjab government that a survey be conducted in rural and urban areas and at least Rs 3 lakh should be given as compensation for the reconstruction of houses damaged due to rains and floods and at least Rs 1 lakh for repairs.
