Chandigarh, 18th April 2025- A BJP delegation led by BJP Punjab Mahila Morcha President Jai Inder Kaur on Friday met the Honorable Governor of Punjab and submitted a detailed memorandum on the alarming situation of illegal sand mining and brutal violence against villagers in Sahnewal constituency of Ludhiana district.
The delegation included the elected panchayats of Gaunsgarh, Garhpur, Khawajke, Mangat, Boothgarh, Rawat, Hawas and Mangali villages. All told in detail about the atrocities being committed by the sand mafia under the patronage of the local administration and the state government.
BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliwal accused the police, mining department and public works department of open collusion in promoting the mafia and demanded immediate action against them. He also raised serious questions over the role of sitting MLA and Minister Hardeep Mundian, who is accused of promoting illegal mining activities in the area.
The delegation also included BJP Punjab spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliwal, senior BJP leaders Vineet Joshi and Geja Ram Valmiki, who reiterated the grievances of the villagers and strongly condemned the failure of the government machinery to act. The memorandum highlighted the destruction of rural roads due to overloaded mining trucks, harassment of villagers, false FIRs filed against peaceful protesters and the horrific incident of April 17, 2025, when mining mafia goons attacked unarmed villagers in broad daylight.
The seriously injured included Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyer Simranjeet Kaur Gill, who was beaten, had her hair pulled and was attacked with a saber, which left her with severe injuries that required 15 stitches and a possible fracture. Many other villagers including Amandeep Singh and Balraj Singh also sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Despite the clear video and live footage, no FIR has been registered against the attackers as the police and administration are shielding the culprits. The BJP delegation alleged the open collusion of the police, the mining department and the public works department in enabling the mafia and demanded immediate action against them. The memorandum also raises serious questions about the role of sitting MLA and Minister Hardeep Mundian, who is accused of promoting illegal mining activities in the area.
The delegation also drew attention to the gross violation of environmental norms at the Raur mining site and demanded its cancellation. After listening to the delegation, the Hon'ble Governor of Punjab gave clear instructions to the DGP of Punjab to immediately file an FIR against those responsible for the attack on the villagers and submit a detailed list of all legal and illegal mining operations across the state.
The Governor assured the delegation that strict action would be taken and justice would be ensured. The Punjab BJP reiterated its stand that it will continue to fight against this unholy alliance of crime and power and stand firmly with the people of Punjab until justice and accountability are meted out.
