While the meeting with Mr. Modi will be an official engagement, the visit to other parts of India will be 'personal'. The Vance family, including their three children, is also expected to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra. Apart from this, the US Vice President's family will also be involved in several cultural engagements.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will “provide an opportunity for both sides to review the progress in bilateral relations and the implementation of the outcomes of the India-US Joint Statement issued on February 13.” The statement, which focused on trade ties, was issued after Prime Minister Modi met US President Donald Trump during his visit to the US.
This is the second high-level visit by the Trump administration to India in recent weeks. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard visited New Delhi in March. Along with Vance’s visit, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is also expected to visit India. Waltz will meet his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval and address the Indo-US Forum organised by the Anant Centre.
Both are co-chairs of the NSA’s India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET). US Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth is also scheduled to visit India in late summer ahead of President Trump's possible participation in the 'Quad' summit.
