SAS Nagar, April 17- Aam Aadmi Ghar Bachao Morcha, Communist Party of India, Bahujan Samaj Party and Police Pensioners Welfare Association, Punjab demanded that immediate action be taken to protect cities and villages of Punjab from floods and rainwater during monsoon. In this regard, the representatives of these organizations have sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Punjab through the Deputy Commissioner Mohali (which was received by Assistant Commissioner Dr. Ankita Kansal) and demanded that immediate orders be issued to the concerned officials in this regard.
Issuing a statement in this regard, Aam Aadmi Ghar Bachao Morcha convener Harminder Singh Mavi, legal advisor Advocate Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, Mohali District Secretary of Communist Party of India Advocate Jaspal Singh Daupar, Bahujan Samaj Party State Secretary Harbhajan Singh Bajheri and District Mohali President Harkadas Dhaliwal said that every year during the rainy season in Punjab, the people of cities and villages suffer a lot due to floods and this phenomenon has been going on for the last several decades.
Due to these floods, where many precious lives are lost every year, people also suffer a loss of crores of rupees. Every year due to floods and rainwater, people's crops are destroyed, the belongings in people's houses are damaged and the houses of many also collapse.
The petition states that due to the government and local administration not taking timely action to solve this problem, people suffer a lot and precious lives are also lost. The letter states that this problem is further aggravated by the corruption in the administration, which deliberately does not start work before the onset of the monsoon and when the monsoon arrives, the funds are embezzled by showing expenses in the papers. He said that the concerned officials never clean the rainwater pipelines, rivers, drains etc. of the cities on time nor do they give any information about it to the people.
Mr. Darshan Singh Dhaliwal and Harminder Singh Mavi said that in the year 2023, a report was prepared by the professors of the Agricultural University of Ludhiana, in which it was stated that the districts of Patiala, Mohali, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Fatehgarh Sahib suffered the most due to floods in Punjab. This damage is caused by the inflow of water in the Ghaggar, Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and lack of timely action.
He said that during the monsoon season of 2024, many villages along the Ghaggar in Derabassi block of Mohali district suffered financial losses worth crores of rupees, but the government has not provided any financial assistance to the flood victims till date. Similarly, in 2024, due to non-cleaning of Patiala Ki Rao river and another rainwater drain, people in Kharar city also suffered losses worth crores of rupees due to rainwater entering the city.
On this occasion, Harbhajan Singh Bajheri, Advocate Jaspal Singh Daupar and Retd: Inspector Mahendra Singh said that regarding this problem of Punjab, orders should be issued immediately to all departments and officials regarding whatever measures are required to protect the people during the rains and information about this action should be given to the people at the district, tehsil and urban levels so that people can come to know about it and the people of the state can avoid this trouble in time and can convey their suggestions to the officials.
He said that if the officials of the concerned department do not initiate this action soon, then he will initiate legal action against the officials in the honorable courts on behalf of the three and a half crore people of Punjab, for which the responsibility will be the Punjab government.
