Chandigarh, February 28- The entire focus of the Punjab government is currently on preparing an effective and efficient policy to curb the menace of drugs and rehabilitate the victims. In this context, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today met the Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of all districts.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister discussed the new drug prevention and rehabilitation policy with the district officials and directed the state to implement this policy to get rid of the menace of drugs. The Chief Minister made it clear that the properties of drug smugglers will be confiscated and if necessary, bulldozers will also be used on them.
In the meeting, the Chief Minister has directed the Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners and SSPs to cooperate. The Chief Minister said that the police will identify drug hotspots, break the supply chain and take strict action against drug smugglers. He stressed that the properties of drug traffickers will be confiscated and destroyed. Chief Minister Mann appealed to the Deputy Commissioners to turn the fight against drugs into a mass movement.
This meeting took place at a time when just a day ago the Punjab government had formed a five-member cabinet sub-committee headed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to curb drugs in the state. Other members of the committee include Ministers Aman Arora, Dr. Balbir Singh, Laljit Singh Bhullar and Taranpreet Singh Sondh.
It may be recalled that the Punjab government had to face public anger on the issue of drugs during the Lok Sabha elections held last year. According to information, in today's meeting, besides officials from the Jail, Sports, Employment and Skill Development, Health and Home Affairs departments, several senior police officers led by DGP Gaurav Yadav were present.
