
Discussion on Prof. Surinder Singh's book 'Hirdamodar' explores medieval Punjab
Chandigarh, 18 February 2025- The Department of History, Panjab University hosted a thought-provoking book discussion on Prof. Surinder Singh's seminal book, "HirDamodar: Context, Translation and Analysis", published by Manohar Publishers (2024). Singh’s work focused on Damodar's 16th-century romance, Hir-Ranjha, and it offers a profound insight into medieval Punjab's society, culture, and politics. Dr. Jasbir Singh, chairperson, Department of History formally welcome the guests and audience. Three panelists discussed on the various aspects of the book including, literary, historical, cultural etc.

The discussants were- Prof. Sarabjit Singh, department of Punjabi, President Punjabi Sahit Academy, threw light on the literary approach of the book. Prof. Priyatosh Sharma highlighted the historical insight and added his remarks. Ms. Chandandeep saw this pioneering work as contextualizing woman during medieval period through Damodar’s view.
Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson Department of History presided the session and proposed his presidential remarks. Dr. Saundarya Kumar Deepak, Department of History offered the formal vote of thanks. The session was witnessed by various and research scholars of various departments. Prof. Mahesh Sharma, and Dr Harjinder Singh Dilgeer were also present there.
