Youth Congress leader Shubh Sekhon opposed the 131st Constitutional Amendment

Chandigarh: Shubh Sekhon said, "I am deeply concerned about the recent proposal to bring Chandigarh under Article 240 of the Constitution, which would give the President regulatory power over the Union Territory." He said, "As a citizen, I believe it is important to approach this issue with sensitivity and respect the sentiments of all stakeholders involved, especially the people of Punjab and Haryana."
Shubham Sekhon stressed that the proposed amendment has sparked controversy, with many in Punjab feeling it undermines their state's claim to Chandigarh as its capital. He said, "It is important to respect the historical context and the promises made to Punjab, including the 1970 Assurance and the 1985 Rajiv-Longowal Accord." "These commitments must be honored to maintain trust and foster good relations between the Center and the states."
According to Shubh Sekhon, this change will have far-reaching consequences, including diminishing Punjab's influence over Chandigarh and concentrating power in the hands of the President. He said, "This will diminish the representation and voice of the people of Chandigarh in the decision-making process, which could impact their daily lives and the city's development." "It is important to ensure that any change in the governance structure prioritizes the rights and interests of the people of Chandigarh, and not just serve the interests of the central government."
Shubh Sekhon appealed to the government to engage fully with all concerned parties, including the people of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, to find a solution that respects the interests of all stakeholders and upholds the principles of federalism. He said, "Let us work together to find a solution that promotes unity, brotherhood, and the well-being of all citizens, regardless of their state or region."
