Vikramjit Sahni raises missing persons cases in the capital in Parliament
Chandigarh:- Rajya Sabha member Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahni along with MP Sandeep Pathak and MP Haris Biren raised the serious issue of alarming increase in the number of missing persons in the national capital in Parliament.
Dr Sahni said that in the first 15 days of this year alone, 807 people have gone missing from Delhi, which is an average of 54 people per day. He added that what is even more alarming is that out of these, 509 are women and 191 are children. Quoting NCRB data, he said that this is not a recent trend. In 2025, more than 23,000 missing persons cases were registered in Delhi, of which more than 60 percent were women and girls. In 2024, about 25,000 cases were registered, most of them women.
Dr Sawhney called for the formation of a special investigation team, strict action against human traffickers and a comprehensive women's safety strategy. He said the current surveillance and policing mechanism is not working effectively. Delhi has about 2.8 lakh government CCTV cameras, more than cities like New York or London.
The failure to trace thousands of missing persons points to serious systemic flaws. Dr Sawhney also said that the pattern of disappearances, especially involving women and children, further strengthens the suspicion of organised human trafficking.
