Supreme Court seeks Election Commissions response on plea against SIR in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the Election Commission's response on a plea filed by MDMK founder and former Rajya Sabha member Vaiko, challenging the election panel's decision to carry out special rectification of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu.
A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi listed the plea for hearing on December 2. Vaiko has challenged the revision process in the state, saying that the notification violates several fundamental rights including the right to equality and various sections of the Representation of the People Act and the Voters Registration Rules, 1960.
Several other political parties like DMK, Communist Party of India (Marxist), TVK and actor Vijay have also challenged the revision process in Tamil Nadu.
On November 11, the Supreme Court had sought separate responses from the Election Commission on petitions filed by leaders of DMK, CPI(M), West Bengal Congress and Trinamool Congress challenging the revision of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The court asked the Madras and Calcutta High Courts to stay any proceedings on petitions challenging the move in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. It also allowed listing of an intervention application filed by the AIADMK in support of the specific revision in Tamil Nadu.
