Supreme Court dismisses PIL on Caste Census 2027 asks Centre to consider suggestions

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to entertain a PIL challenging the process of recording, categorising and verifying the caste of citizens during the 2027 Census. However, the Supreme Court has directed the Central Government and the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India to consider the suggestions made by the petitioner.
A bench headed by the Chief Justice clarified that there is no pre-determined data to identify caste figures. The bench said that the entire census process is governed by the Census Act, 1958 and the rules made thereunder, 1990, which empower the concerned authorities to decide the manner and points at which the census will be conducted.
